Best for Learners on a budget who want to prioritise speaking practice, or advanced learners looking for affordable conversation practice.
Our verdict

iTalki is a strong alternative to Preply, particularly for budget-conscious learners. The sheer variety of tutors is impressive, and community tutors offer genuinely affordable speaking practice. The trade-off is less rigorous quality control and a more marketplace-style experience.

What we like

  • Huge selection of tutors — more variety than most platforms
  • Community tutors available at very affordable rates (from $10/hr)
  • Native speakers from every Spanish-speaking country
  • Notebook feature for writing corrections from the community
  • Trial sessions available for testing tutors before committing
  • Buy credits in bulk for savings

What we don't like

  • Less platform polish than Preply — more of a marketplace feel
  • Professional teacher vs community tutor distinction can be confusing
  • Quality control is less rigorous than Preply
  • Overwhelming choice — harder to find the right tutor
  • No curriculum or structured learning path

What is iTalki?

iTalki is a global language tutoring marketplace connecting learners with tutors for live online lessons. Founded in 2007 and based in Hong Kong, it has grown to host thousands of Spanish tutors across two categories: professional teachers (with formal qualifications) and community tutors (native speakers without formal teaching credentials but often with practical experience).

Professional teachers vs community tutors

The distinction between professional teachers and community tutors is important to understand before using iTalki. Professional teachers are vetted for qualifications and tend to have structured lesson plans and formal teaching experience. Community tutors are typically native speakers who teach conversationally but may not have pedagogy training.

For structured grammar learning or exam preparation, a professional teacher is the safer choice. For conversation practice, developing speaking confidence, and immersion-style sessions, a good community tutor can be excellent and costs significantly less — often $10–$20/hour compared to $25–$60+ for professional teachers.

Breadth of selection

One of iTalki's genuine strengths is the volume and diversity of its tutor base. You can find tutors from Spain, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Cuba, and virtually every other Spanish-speaking country — invaluable if you're learning a specific dialect. You can also filter by time zone, availability, lesson type, and teaching style.

The notebook feature

iTalki has a lesser-known community feature called the Notebook, where you can write journal entries in Spanish and receive corrections from native speakers in the community. This mirrors Busuu's correction feature and provides asynchronous feedback on writing — a useful supplement to speaking lessons.

Platform experience

iTalki's platform is functional but less polished than Preply. The interface can feel cluttered, and the process of finding and vetting tutors requires more effort. Preply's design and quality controls make it somewhat easier to find a reliably good tutor, though Preply's tutor rates tend to be slightly higher as a result.

Pricing and credits

iTalki uses a credit system — you purchase credits (essentially USD, 1 credit = $1) and spend them on lessons. There's no subscription required, which suits learners who want flexibility. Buying credits in bulk (typically $20 minimum, often higher promotional bundles) sometimes unlocks bonuses.

The bottom line

iTalki is an excellent option for learners who want the benefits of real tutoring at a more accessible price point, or who want maximum flexibility in finding a specific type of tutor. The community tutor tier is particularly strong value for speaking practice. If you want more structured quality control and a better-designed experience, Preply is worth the modest premium.

Best for

Learners on a budget who want to prioritise speaking practice, or advanced learners looking for affordable conversation practice.

Not for

Beginners who need structured guidance, or learners who want a platform with clear quality standards.
