Two ways to learn from real people
Lingoda and iTalki both deliver what no app can: live Spanish instruction with real teachers. But the experience of using them is very different, and they suit different types of learners.
Lingoda: the online school experience
Lingoda operates as an online school. Classes are taught by certified teachers, follow a defined CEFR-aligned curriculum, and are available in group format (up to 5 students) or private. Materials are prepared and provided. The experience is closer to attending a language school than to hiring a freelance tutor.
This structure is a strength for learners who struggle with self-direction. You don't need to know what to work on — the curriculum handles that. You don't need to find and vet teachers — Lingoda does that. You just show up to class.
Lingoda's Sprint challenges are particularly powerful: commit to daily classes for a month and receive cashback or a full refund. These accountability mechanisms have produced genuine transformations for learners who complete them.
iTalki: the open marketplace
iTalki gives you access to thousands of individual Spanish tutors — from certified professional teachers to native-speaker community tutors. You choose based on your own research: watching intro videos, reading reviews, checking availability and price. The lesson content is whatever you and your tutor agree on.
This openness is both liberating and potentially overwhelming. Finding a genuinely great tutor requires some effort. But when you find the right person — someone whose teaching style, availability, price, and dialect match your needs — the results can be exceptional.
Group classes: Lingoda's unique offering
Lingoda's group class format has no real equivalent on iTalki. Learning alongside other students (even just 2–4 others in a small group) changes the dynamic: you hear other learners' mistakes, you practise responding to different voices, and you develop confidence speaking when not everything is directed at you personally. For many learners, group practice is a valuable stage between solo study and full 1-on-1 conversation.
Price comparison
Both platforms offer budget-accessible options: Lingoda's group classes run €10–14/hr, while iTalki community tutors start around $10/hr. Private lessons on Lingoda and professional teachers on iTalki are broadly comparable at €30–50/hr range. For learners specifically seeking affordable group practice, Lingoda has no real equivalent on iTalki.
The verdict
Neither platform is objectively better — they serve different learning styles. Lingoda is ideal for learners who want structure, consistency, and the accountability of a defined programme. iTalki is ideal for learners who know what they want from a tutor, value flexibility, or want to explore a wide variety of teachers before committing. Some learners use both: Lingoda group classes for structure, iTalki for personalised practice on specific weaknesses.
